we are excited to open two solo exhibitions friday night for scott upton and katy schneider. both artists are coming into town for the reception from 6-8 pm. there is no denying the fact that we get exhilarated every time a new show arrives at the gallery. seeing a whole body of work from an artist at one time is a glimpse into their world. it can have a profound impression on the viewer.
light is the main subject in both artist's work. scott upton uses light to add luminosity to his amazing abstract paintings. they glow as if an inner spotlight is shining out from within.
i've always maintained that my work is about color and light and their effect on our emotions. my inspiration comes from nature, whose sublime forms and colors and chaotic power shape the ever-changing landscape. for me, light is the unifying force, transforming everything it touches by banishing darkness and encouraging renewal. in my work I've always sought to suggest, in addition to the beauty, the feelings of hope and peace that light imparts.

katy schneider uses light to find peotry in her flower paintings rather than simply describe the still life. taryn day of the art room interviewed katy schneider earlier this year and provided very good insight into katy's paintings and technique.
by focusing on creating a strong sense of light and a clear sense of space, i hope to draw the viewer into my paintings. by manipulating these elements i hope to discover and reveal particular relationships. i also try to create a "forever" kind of quality to the work, though the subject matter may be of a fleeting nature. this is especially true of the recent flower paintings i have enjoyed doing. my love of light, my homegrown peonies and manet's flower paintings provide inspiration.
