















































mel rea received a bfa with honors from kent state university in 1995. after focusing as a clay artist for nearly two decades, mel shifted to working two dimensionally. with years of craftsmanship playing a pivotal role, she remains very process driven in her explorations of multiple mediums. of the many mediums pulling her interest, paper is by far her greatest love.
she notes, “It is the softest and most vulnerable medium to work with and unforgiving at any moment. Handmade paper in particular is unpredictable and moody. papers need to be framed and encapsulated in a box makes it exude the quality of a delicate treasure. i find working with paper most rewarding. i often scrape, scratch, and burnish the surface while utilizing ink, acrylic, and powdered graphite.
