"art is not what you see, but what you make others see." edgar degas
a decade ago when my work started to reflect on environmental issues, it was a shift that happened in my personal growth and world view.
i remember taking my kids to isla mujeres and being horrified to see the healthy reef that paul and i had seen 20 years earlier completely dead from coral bleaching. witnessing first hand this sad state, and filtering this and other experiences have inspired me to focus my observations on the escalating threats of man's destructive behavior to the natural world through my work.

bill braun's paintings are impressive feats of hyper-realism. what appears to be the ingredients for a third grade art project of cut out construction paper, masking tape, staples and brown craft paper loosely assembled on the wall is in reality a tight and precise execution of acrylic paint on a flat canvas. trompe l'oeil (french..."deceives the eye"), a type of painting, usually a still life, which by means of various illusionist devices persuades the viewer that he is looking at the objects actually represented. successful trompe l'oeil occupies a very shallow space behind the picture-plane, or actually seems to project beyond the picture surface. the deception of the eye doesn't only linger for a moment, but continues to trick the viewer on and on and again and again.
painting, for me, is an exercise in the transmutation of light and energy into a three dimensional plane. the reaction to colors and action mark-making are intended to transport the viewer to a realm of undulating vibrational rhythms. each painting represents my journey to a plane of consciousness that guides my brush and favors circular momentum. i offer my heart and hands to move in tandem with the consistent flow of intelligent infinity. inspiration is ever present and universal for those who choose to witness it. to create and to be creative is the highest form of reciprocation to our creator.
