facades by francis livingston

February 27, 2015 Hidell Brooks

hidell brooks is preparing to switch it up next week.  one of the two solo exhibitions opening next friday is facades new paintings by francis livingston.  francis livingston studied at the rocky mountain school of art in denver before moving to san francisco to attend the academy of art.  he went on to teach illustration at the san francisco academy of art for 10 years.  influenced by sargent and whistler, livingston painted primarily in a monochromatic style until he began to study the work of the bay area figurative movement, including richard diebenkorn, wayne thiebaud and others.  their influence lead to his use of color as a tool to define objects and create dramatic lighting through shadowing within his paintings.

architecture has long been a subject of painters.  i look back through history and artists that have had an influence on the evolution of my interest in painting buildings and they are a formidable group of painters. from john singer sargent to the ashcan school, george bellows, edward hopper, richard diebenkorn and so many others.

--francis livingston, 2015

livingston is a master at combining architecture and color to create a form of urban realism that is abstract in nature.  the unique combination is stunningly complex.  along with francis' facades we will be showing new abstract paintings by charles walker.  all available paintings by francis livingston are under his artist page on our website.  the opening reception for both exhibitions will be friday march 6th from 6-8 pm.  please call the gallery if you have any questions.
