we are thrilled to be showing the beautiful paintings by scott upton at hidell brooks gallery. we are gearing up for the new expanded space by adding a few artists to our already awesome stable. scott upton has always been high on our artist we covet list. we have come across his amazing paintings quite a bit over the years. they have always stopped us in our tracks with their beauty. the depth of color he captured in his minimal painting makes them anything but minimal.
he received a ba in fine arts from the university of north carolina at asheville and a degree in commerical graphics and photography from mcDowell technical college and a degree in visual communication from the art institute of atlanta. paintings by scott upton are featured in two movies that are currently out trouble with the curve and the reluctant fundamentalist.
"Light matters. The Atlanta artist excels at suggesting it on canvases that can glow. At times, he uses reflective material to enhance the effect. And while he does abstract paintings, some of these works more than suggest realism, with a horizon line here, a sky there, even the hint of buildings. There’s also the influence of the great 19th–century English landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, who took a very solid world and, with color and form, de-materialized it."
